I’ve been researching online about medicine ball exercises and I know that they have been used by boxers and martial artists for years in their training, so I started there. Most of the stuff I have found involves some type of “contact” drills where they bounce the ball off of their abs or sides while they do crunches, etc. Does that really work anything and is it safe to do?

Free work out plans-Everything You Need to Know

There are a lot of free work out plans and regimens out there specifically tailored to body type, weight, goals and health conditions. From the overweight to professional athletes, the variety seems endless.
But, like any over-complicated subject, work out plans can be divided in five basic groups: Strength, Conditioning, Toning, Aerobic and Athletic.

The first of our five free work out plans, strength training is usually practiced by professional power lifters, with emphasis on building enough muscle mass to support Herculean bouts with enormous weights. Mostly focused on the lower and core areas of the body, strength training builds mass without regard to aesthetic. Typically, those who train for strength have thick arms, legs and torsos. Without cuts or definition, the bulky appearance of people who undergo this work out plan is specifically designed to lift. Though they limber up during warm ups, the sheer girth of their musculature betrays their lack of flexibility.

Usually, this plan involves lower repetitions of gradually increasing weights. Since the power of the body lies in the legs and abdomen, strength training involves a lot of power exercises for these areas.
The second in the five free work out plans, conditioning training is used for rigorous preparations for big events. Runners, boxers, swimmers, cyclists and those who are looking forward to extended physical exertion do conditioning training. A mix of cardio training for stamina, flexibility and strength routines, conditioning allows people to make their bodies ready for continuous activity. It’s pacing for marathon runners and swimmers, lactic acid tolerance for tri-athletes and stamina for boxers.

The third in the five free work out plans, toning work outs are for body builders. Poster boys and girls for the fitness world, toning emphasizes the natural cuts of muscles, the ripped arms and washboard abs. The tricky part about this training is that cuts only naturally appear when there is extremely minimal amounts of body fat. So, toning workouts are whole-body work outs, though targeting specific areas like the shoulders and abdomen, there’s a large weight-loss facet in this work out plan.

The fourth in the five free work out plans, aerobic work out is easily the most popular workout plan. Designed for minimal impact and stamina build up, it is designed to trim down excess fat and build up cardiovascular strength. Popular aerobic exercises include brisk walking, jogging, cycling and dancing. Most trendy programs like strip teasing and fast sports like tennis and badminton are aerobic exercises designed to slim and enliven.

The fifth in the five free work out plans, athletic workouts are scientifically designed to match the needs of athletes. From footwork and agility training regimens of basketball players to short bursts of force for football defensive players, trainers take multiple exercises from different disciplines to train the athlete for his or her sport.

Beginner, intermediate or advanced, it is good to know the different basic types of work-out plans and find the iteration that is best suited for one’s purpose.

And since regimens have their innate risks, it is important to consult with a physician before adopting a work out plan. Also, regular exercise is futile without proper nutrition and habits, be cautious to seek council from a dietician for a nutritional guide best suited for your training regimen.

Bipolar Disorder ~ Which Way Do Your Moods Swing?

Your moods have been swinging back and forth, driving you (pardon the expression) crazy. You go to the doctor seeking answers. After lots of questions and possibly tests for other illnesses you are diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder. While having a name for the way you’ve been feeling may be a bit of a relief, the reality of having a “mental illness” can be frightening.

So, take a deep breath and relax. Lots of us have BP Disorder, you are not alone. You will have questions and this should be one of the first – which BP Disorder do you have? There are several types of Bipolar Disorder which are characterized by the length, frequency and pattern of the manic and depressive episodes. Proper diagnosis is essential for effective treatment.

I have had the unique experience of originally being diagnosed as BP 2 and then upgraded to BP 1 ten years later.

Bipolar 1 Disorder

Those with BP 1 experience extreme manic episodes or mixed episodes (mania and depression occurring nearly every day for at least one week) and one or more major depressive episodes. BP 1 is the most severe form of the illness. Psychosis, paranoia and hospitalization are all associated with BP1. Episodic depression does not have to be experienced for a diagnosis of BP1 but it usually exists.

My own experience with BP1has included a trip to the psych ward, paranoia and the inability to work for months. Mixed episodes and suicidal thoughts were also present during my last relapse.

Bipolar 2 Disorder

Since depression is what normally sends us to the doctor, BP 2 is typically misdiagnosed as major depression. Basically, once the depression slips into hypomania, you feel so much better that it doesn’t occur to you to call the doctor or to stay on your meds. Frankly, you feel just fine – maybe even better than fine, that’s because the hypomania has taken over. The elevated moods associated with hypomania are welcomed warmly after a deep depression. Most of the time friends and family simply believe that the depression has lifted and you are back to being the life of the party. The problem is that “what goes up, must come down” and usually it’s not a level mood that shows up.

My diagnosis of BP2 came during a deep depression that followed a wild hypomanic summer which was kicked off by anti-depressants meant to help me quick smoking. That’s right, I was given an anti-depressant to help me quit smoking and to relieve the slight depression caused by frequent migraines. It took only a couple of months and I was swinging high on Hypomania Mountain. I was running on all cylinders at work, I opened my own home business, never slept and spent a lot of time drinking (a form of self-medication that the hospital will consider abuse).

Not Otherwise Specified (NOS)

Bipolar Disorder NOS, sometimes called “sub-threshold” Bipolar Disorder, is a “catch-all” diagnosis that is used to indicate bipolar illness that does not fit into any of the formal DSM-IV bipolar diagnostic categories (BP1, BP 2, or Cyclothymia-see below). If an individual seems to be suffering from some bipolar manic and depressive symptoms but does not meet the criteria for BP1, 2 or Cyclothymia a diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder NOS (Not Otherwise Specified) is given.

Honestly, I think we’re all sort of BP NOS because I’ve never met two people with BP Disorder that have classically met all requirements of one or the other types. It seems to me that BP is really as unique as its owner. And by the way, you are the owner of the BP, it is not the owner of you.

Cyclothymia

Cyclothymia is a milder form of bipolar disorder characterized by several hypomanic episodes and less severe episodes of depression that alternate for at least two years. The severity of this illness may change over time.

Rapid Cycling

Bipolar disorder with rapid cycling is diagnosed when a person experiences four or more manic, hypomanic, or depressive episodes in any 12-month period. Rapid cycling can occur with any type of bipolar disorder, and may be a temporary condition for some people.

Confusing, isn’t it?

Be sure to discuss your diagnosis with your psychiatrist. Do your own research and write down any questions you may have and then ask them. Remember, YOU own BP and it is as unique as you are, therefore, you have to write your own owner’s manual because the best anyone else can do is give you the general information. You have the specifics and you must become self-aware to find them.

Just a note – The abbreviation for Bipolar Disorder is BP even though you might think it would be BD. BD is used for Borderline Personality Disorder. I don’t know why, just thought I’d let you know.

It is not known yet what exactly triggers off the weakening of the brain cells. There are many factors which lead the growth of Alzheimer’s disease.

Causes of Alzheimer’s disease:

The chief factor in the growth of Alzheimer’s disease is age of the sufferer. The tendency of the growth of the disease is more once you cross the age of 65 and adds up every five years after 65 years of age. But this condition is not faced by older people alone. Alzheimer’s disease is genetic, but people even without a family history of Alzheimer’s also face this, but it is not as common as the ones with a genetic history.

In case of inherited Alzheimer’s the indications start showing earlier like starting from the age of 35 to 60 years of age. The tendency of developing Alzheimer’s is higher in case of the people suffering from Down’s syndrome. This is due to the presence of an additional copy of the ‘chromosome 21′, in which a protein which is also present in the brain of the people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

It is proven that people who have had head injuries or bad whiplashes are more prone to Alzheimer’s disease. It is also said that aluminium also causes Alzheimer’s disease.

Symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease:

Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is quite difficult as the indications are very analogous to many other conditions. None of the cases of Alzheimer’s are the same as every individual reacts differently to the condition. There are three stages of Alzheimer’s disease: mild, moderate and severe. In case of mild Alzheimer’s disease the symptoms would be forgetfulness, weak memory, getting confused, and difficulty in speech and mood swings.

This all occurs as a result of slow loss of the functioning of the brain. In case of moderate Alzheimer’s disease the symptoms are: delusions, repetitive behaviour, hallucinations, incontinence, imagining things which you haven’t done and disturbance in sleep. This person would even have problems in keeping a track of recent happening. A problem with speech and language can initiate at this is stage. This in turn would build frustrations and depression resulting in mood swings.

In case of severe Alzheimer’s the sufferer is highly disoriented and confused. At this stage the person tends to experience delusions and hallucinations. The delusions and hallucinations are worse in the night as the sufferer tends to get violent, suspicious and demanding with people around him.

The symptoms in case of severe Alzheimer’s are: loss in weight and appetite, difficulty in swallowing, loss of long and short term memory, highly prone to infection and difficulty in moving about. This is the stage when the sufferer needs to be completely taken care of as there can barely do anything by them.

Treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease:

There is no cure of Alzheimer’s disease found as yet. But there is medication available which would aid in delaying the growth of the disease. These medications help by averting a chemical breakdown in the brain. As a result the weakening of the brain also slows down.

Geodaesia by John Love.
Twelfth edition, printed in 1793 by Samuel Campbell.

I found it in a box of my late grandpa’s genealogy reports, signed by a revolutionary soldier. I love it, but I’d like to know what I’m looking at to decide where to store it.

I would love such a book as well.
The best way to store it is where you, unfortunately, can’t get at it: sealed as well as possible against any handling, dust and air– all three of which make a collectible book fall apart and age more quickly.

I’ve read of some collectors sealing their books in Mylar bags, getting all the air out etc. I’ve read of folks taking a few last pics of favorite pages, etc. and sealing it up.
I’ve read of some simply wrapping their old books as tightly as possible, and putting it in a dry (meaning no actual moisture), dark, dust-free place.

I have many old books, but don’t collect (yet). I keep my books in what is supposed to be the pantry… dark, dust-free, shelved carefully and tightly, etc. Not the best, but not the worst, either.

The age of the book is of most interest…
But I can tell you now that collectors won’t be much interested in a twelfth edition
*(is the copyright 1793, or that this actual edition’s publication date? that is important.)* …nor if it’s in poor condition.
Collectors like their books to be in ‘very good’ conditon, even when so old.

Suggest you ‘shop’ around at Bauman’s Rare Books online, where you may also be able to get an online appraisal (you can find them through Google; I can’t make a link to them) …and also research this book and collecting books at the public library, with the reference librarian’s help.
